Family Vacation Day #2

Bye-Bye hotel...

Hello Mesa Verde National Park!!!
This site has ruins from the Anasazi Indians who made their dwellings in the side of the cliffs!!  They lived here from about AD 600 to AD 1300.  Fascinating!!

The kids had fun posing like the statues in the Visitor's Center.

Checking out a dwelling from Navajo Canyon Overlook.
For most of the time the Native Americas inhabited this area they actually lived on the mesa tops.  It wasn't until the last 75-100 years they moved down into the cliff dwellings.  They would just scale the cliffs up and down to get where they needed to go!

Sun Point View
You could see several different dwellings from this spot.

Starting our hike down to the Spruce Tree House

Abby is ThRiLlEd!!  She LOVES to hike!
(NOT!)

Where we're headed

If I remember right a community of about 100 people lived here.

The blackened ceilings are evidence of fires burning.

Looking down into a kiva ~ a place of spiritual significance

They got to go inside one!

Tanner had fun just going up and down stairs. Ü

You can look into the window of this room and it is so tiny!!  And several people occupied 1 room.  Tyler couldn't even fit in there.  They must of been a small people!!

These scenery shots were taken from Park Point...the highest point in Mesa Verde...breathtaking!

After our fun in Mesa Verde we had a long afternoon drive up to Breckinridge, CO.  Tyler's family has had a condo up there for years that they would go to every summer.  We got two condos this year and had a mini family reunion with most of Tyler's siblings and their families there.  We hadn't seen some of them in 3 or more years!!

Playing Red Light/Green Light on the deck of the condo Jay and Cindy's families stayed in.
I'm so glad I suggested this game...it totally broke the ice.
Loved, loved, loved seeing cousins play together!!!

Family Vacation Day #1

We were so lucky this summer!  We got to go to Colorado AND Utah for a family reunion, to celebrate Tyler's parents 50th Anniversary. and to celebrate Tyler's grandma's 90th birthday!!

We left on Monday, July 8th.  It was fun riding in our new van!
 Here are the happy travelers!!

Our first stop was the to the Petrified Forest.  This was the 1st time for any of us and we didn't plan this trip out too well.  We had looked online a little but basically knew that it was something you drove through and that were would a couple of picture ops and gift shops.  We stopped right at the entrance to the park where there was a "museum" and lots of fun rocks to climb on and we spent our whole allotted hour there...only to find out as we drove through the park that there were even bigger and better museums to stop at and fun little hikes to take and all kind of things.  Ah!  Oh well.  We couldn't have gone on a hike anyway because if you'll notice in the pictures Andy only has one shoe on.  He lost his flip flop somewhere between the gas station and here...and our tennis shoes were smooshed under everything in the very back of the van.  We decided we'll come back up here again to spend the day...maybe even camp.  You live and learn!

Andy, our rock lover, was in heaven!

Ben chose to get fools gold from the gift shop.

We did stop at Newspaper Rock and see some petroglyphs.

Can you see them??

I couldn't find any more but they are supposedly all in these rocks.

We took lots of pictures with this thing on our trip.  Meet Flat Dr.  The boy's orthodontist office is doing a contest this summer that whoever takes the coolest pictures with Flat Dr. (or Super Dr. McDonald) on their summer vacations will win a mini-ipad.  We'll keep you posted on if we win!!  We forgot to take him out while we were at the Petrified Forest so we got a picture of it with Andy and his souvenirs to prove we were there. Ü
Once we got into New Mexico we had a 2 hr. detour we had to take because of road conditions.  Not too fun and not too happy because we were trying to make it to Four Corners and we didn't make it in time.  :(

Trying to keep Tanner happy.
