Utah Trip Days 1 & 2

Day 1

We recently got back from a week long trip to Utah. It was jammed packed full of fun!! 583 pictures were taken!! I'm going to break our trip up and blog about each day.

We left on Saturday July 2nd. We decided to try the trip in one day. Tyler said never again!! It took us 13 hours with lots of stops. We learned one thing about Ben. Apparently he doesn't go to the bathroom while in the car. This boy has had no interest in potty training but after about 6 hours of traveling he was really hurting. In the middle of nowhere he shouts out, "I want to go potty on the toilet!!" Ok. We stopped at the next gas station we could find but we didn't quite make it to the potty. He just had to go.. and he kept going and going. He overflowed his diaper. Poor guy!! Several hours later when we stopped for dinner we tried putting him on the potty. He freaked out and clung to me but I made him sit cause I knew he needed to go. He didn't even realize it but after a while I looked down and he was going potty!! In the toilet!! He even stood up and went some more. So Ben finally went potty in the toilet in Filmore, Utah. He did the same thing on the way home by Jacob's Lake here in AZ. Do you think he had any interest in going the whole time we were in Utah or since we've been back. Of course not! But at least he knows he can do it.

Day 2

We went to church with Tyler's Uncle Matt and Aunt Gwen who we were staying with. After church we watched Tyler's cousin Mitch do tricks on his unicycle. The kids all got a turn sitting on the little one.

We also went to the Salt Lake Cemetary. I find cemetaries fascinating. So many people - so many stories - such old graves. Aunt Gwen was able to look online and find a map of "famous Mormons" buried there so we set out to find them.

We were able to find most of the prophets.

John Taylor

Wilford Woodruff

Joseph F. Smith

Heber J. Grant

George Albert Smith

David O. McKay

Joseph Fielding Smith

Harold B. Lee

Spencer W. Kimball

President Gordon B. Hinckley

Several of the prophets had pennies on their graves. I'd never heard of that. President Hickley had lots of little gifts.

At the gas station on the way out of town I found 7 pennies on the ground. I almost didn't pick them up. I'm glad I did so that the kids could each put one on President Hinckley's grave.

Other graves we found...

Orin Porter Rockwell

Huge memorial to Hyrum Smith

Mary Fielding Smith ~ wife of Hyrum; mother of Joseph F. Smith

a wife of Brigham Young J. Golden Kimball

J. Rueben Clark

We were able to find the grave of Tyler's great grandma ~ Amy Jane Roberts Stevens

Ty by great grandma's grave; the kids great great grandma

The evening was spent with Tyler grandparents ~ Grandma and Grandpa Gibson. Grandpa Gibson turned 90 this year and Grandma will be 88 on Pioneer Day.

Fun! That's so cool that you got pictures with all those graves of the different prophets and stuff. :)

I am like you about old cemeteries. I LOVE all the history that you can find in them! It's amazing how many "gospel greats" are buried in that one cemetery! Seriously awesome! We will be headed up to Utah hopefully before the end of this year, to adopt our 6th kiddo'! It's so beautiful there! We are excited! Glad you had such a great trip!

Love your post. Glad you had a great time. Reminded me of my summers as a kid visiting my moms family. We often took walks in the evening to the cemetery nearby and it was such an adventure to read all the gravestones and to find people related to us in some way! Thanks for bringing back those memories.
