A Broken Thumb

Back in mid December Abby came home from school saying her thumb really hurt.  Apparently she was reaching down to pick up her lunch box...which is right next to the area where they keep the balls and recess equipment...and a basketball came "flying out of nowhere" and hit her.  Now you have to understand that with this girl something hurts everyday.  It is not uncommon for her to say she sprained her finger and then to walk around with tape on her fingers for days.  So I just figured, here we go again!  Oh, and she milked this so good too...saying it was hard for her write and could I write her homework for her (she's left handed...she hurt her left thumb)...that she couldn't practice the piano even though she had a recital the next week (which she really struggled through but I was so proud of her effort).  I was not going to give in!!  I would help her a little with writing here and there, I let her go with her hand wrapped to school for a day or two, and tried to be empathetic but she was going to learn that you just can't make a big deal out of every little thing!!

Well, after 2 weeks of her complaining of it still hurting, and noticing that it had started to swell, I finally decided to take her into the doctor.  They did an x-ray and I about died when he said the words, "She has a pretty bad fracture!!  I can't believe she's dealt with this for 2 whole weeks...she must be in a lot of pain!!"  Not only was it broken but the fracture was close to the growth plate so we needed to go see a surgeon to make sure their wasn't any further damage.  You have got to be kidding me!!  When we left the office the doctor said, "She says a pretty high pain tolerance.  The next time you even suspect something is bothering her you better bring her in."  BEST MOM EVER!!!

It took a whole week before we were able to get into the surgeon.  Luckily all was well, no further damage down, no surgery needed, and Abby was the first one out of our whole family to get a cast.  I treated her to a slushy and a donut at QT to celebrate...and to maybe help me not feel so guilty. Grandpa signing her cast

I totally meant to take some pictures of the signatures on her cast before they took it off and I completely forgot!!  I can't believe I did that!!  People who signed her cast were...mom, dad, Andy, Alex, Ben, Tanner, Grandma, Grandpa, Katelynn and Audrey Kent, and Cole Fish
