We LoVeD having Tyler's parents come and visit us over Thanksgiving.  We made good use of every single second!!

So excited to see Grandma!!

Grandma showing the kids fun apps on her phone

The first night they were here we left Grandpa and Abby home to babysit while Grandma, Tyler and I did a session at the Gilbert temple...with yummy Kneaders afterwards. Ü

The next afternoon it was off to the QCPAC to see a performance of High School Musical 2
Saturday, November 22nd
This helped Abby pass off one of her Personal Progress Goals Ü

We knew the boy who played Troy...Tucker Abney!! Ü

Tanner had fun showing Grandma and Grandpa all his Rescue Hereos Ü

Aldine and Larry were able to get together with their good friends Clate and Carol Mask.  Carol and Aldine became close friends when Aldine moved to Westchester,CA when she was 12.  They've stayed in touch...even through the Mask's being mission presidents in Spain, Elder Mask being a member of the 70, and a temple president in Guatemala!!  Now they live in Val Vista Lakes not too far from us...and it turns out they were in my Aunt Marsha and Aunt Jerrilyn's ward while their kids were growing up!!
Tuesday November 25th

They literally live on a lake and have a boat to go with it!  Tanner was in heaven!!

Especially when Brother Mask pulled out the pirate gear!!

It was a super fun afternoon!!

Poor Andy had to get a tooth pulled during a their visit. :(
He was pretty shaken up about it but was brave!!

Getting our turkey ready!!

Tyler decided he wanted to try cooking our turkey down the street in the Wilcken's fire pit.  There was quite a few turkeys and they cooked all through the night.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Next it was off to the the Gila Valley where Larry's ancestors settled.
Look...its the temple!!
Friday, November 28th

We visited with Larry's cousin Verla Wheeler and her husband Carl.
They took us on our tour of the town.

The kids had fun at their house collecting pecans,

swinging,

exploring,

and checking out Carl's rock collection. Ü

We went to the Thatcher Cemetery where some of Tyler's ancestors are buried

John Matthew Allen is Tyler's great great grandpa.  He was actually born John Matthew Johnson but was later adopted by Orvel Morgan Allen when he married John's mother.  In his own words, "In 1850 Mother left Father to join the Saints because Father did not believe in the Gospel. Soon after she met O. M. Allen and was married to him. I was adopted to Father and have always been known by his name." So we were almost Johnson's!!  Here John is buried with his second wife Ann.  They were some of the pioneers of Gila Valley...coming to the valley in October of 1899.

It would be Larry's great grandpa.  Several of his children and other Allen relatives were also buried here.

We walked around the Gila Valley temple.  Its amazing to think of how these ancestors must have rejoiced in heaven when this temple was announced!

Tanner stayed at home with Grandma Pam for this whole adventure Ü
We came to the open house!! Ü

We got a personal tour of the History Museum.  Verla's sister, Norlene, works at the museum and let us in even though it was closed for the day!!

Where was Abby for that cute picture you may ask?  Ü She's a strange one. Ü

COUSINS!!!
Larry's father, John Carl, and Verla and Norlene's mother, Hannah May, were brother and sister...

There were pictures on the wall of prominent people in Gila Valley.  2 of Tyler's ancestors were on the wall.  Here is John Matthew Allen (mentioned from the cemetery above) with his 1st wife Hannah Batty.

This is John and Anna Maria Alder who immigrated from Switzerland.  Their daughter Mary Louise married John Matthew Allen's son John William.  John and Mary Louise had a son named John Carl...who had a son named Larry Carl...who had a son named Tyler!  Wow!! Ü

Not only was John Alder's picture on the wall but the museum also had his Bible the he brought from Switzerland when his immigrated to the US in 1895.

This is also his shoe last stand.  John Alder was a cobbler in Switzerland as well as in Gila Valley.

These next 3 pieces were made by Mary Louise Alder Allen for her daughter Hannah May (Larry's aunt)
a nightgown for Hannah's trousseau

pillow case

baby petticoat

Messing around...

I thought is was fascinating to learn that the blanket Alex is sitting on is a lap robe for a carriage and was in use before the turn of the century!!  Norlene let him go behind the chain and sit...PROMISE!!  Love the old dresses!!

Not sure which Allen this house belonged to...but what a cool picture!!

Pictures of these 2 ladies

THEN

and NOW Ü

Another cemetery...I LOVE cemeteries!!

The Leavitt's are another of Tyler's line.  Tyler's grandpa, Joseph Carl Allen, married Aura Ola Leavitt.  These 3 sisters are some of her great aunts.  Tyler's mom had been reading us stories about these sisters on the drive up to Gila Valley.  We had no idea this monument with the grave Mary was here in Pima.  It was a great find!!  We come through their brother Dudley.

Here's Orvel...the one who adopted John Matthew Johnson.
"He joined the LDS church in 1838, for which he was disinherited by his father. He was a member of the body guard of Joseph Smith at Nauvoo, spent time in prison with the Prophet, and was present when "The Mantle of Joseph fell upon Brigham".  He was given a Patriarchal Blessing by Hyrum Smith, wherein he was promised, among other things that his name would be honored by his Children and perpetuated from generation to generation, Forever.  In 1846 he was in the battle of Nauvoo, and shortly after was sent back by Brigham Young to get the sick, poor, and those left stranded. It was this company which experienced "The Miracle of the Quail".  He lived in Springville, Spanish Fork, Toquerville, St. George, and Kanab.  He built the first house in St. George, with the native black malapai rock.  He was called by the church to help settle Arizona Territory.  Orvel drove his horse and buggy to Lehi to visit wife number two. During his absence, the family dug a cellar and left the hole unprotected. He returned in the dark of night and walked into that hole, breaking his back. He died a few weeks later in his 89th year."

Holy Cow!  What a life...and then what a way to go!  Love all the stories and information you can find on www.familysearch.org.

Tyler's 3rd great grandparents...Abby's 4th great.

There's John Alder!!

And Mary Louise and John William Allen...Tyler's great grandparents.
